Language Program
What is the Language Program?
The Spanish & Portuguese Language Program consists of Spanish classes 1001-1054 and Portuguese classes 1101-1104. If you are looking for information pertaining to classes in the 3XXX level, please refer to Undergraduate Information.
The language program consists of the beginning and intermediate levels of Spanish and Portuguese culture and language instruction. The focus is on learning to read, write, listen to and speak the languages. By completing the language program’s highest level, students fulfill the CLA language requirement for graduation and are prepared to move on within the Spanish and Portuguese Department to complete a minor or a major.
If you have never taken Spanish before and wish to start taking Spanish 1001, please note the following:
- If it has been less than 5 years since you've graduated from High School you can either scan and email or fax your High School Transcripts** to us (fax number is 612-625-3549, email is spanport@umn.edu). If you are faxing us information, you can fax your unofficial transcripts as soon as possible and we will hold them until you come in to our office. If it has been more than 5 years since you've been in High School than we only need your unofficial college transcript.
- We request these transcripts to ensure that people taking Span 1001 are truly beginning Spanish speakers. If you've had some Spanish you should be registering for Spanish 1022 which does not require a permission number to register.
**If you submitted your High School transcripts or previous college transcripts to the University of Minnesota along with your application, you can go to 240 Williamson Hall (U of M Admissions) to receive a copy of your High School Transcript.
To figure out which level of Spanish you should start at if you have already taken Spanish, refer to the Language Testing Program at: https://langtest.umn.edu/info/placement/spanish
If you need information on retroactive credit in the 1xxx level, please contact your college advising office at class.umn.edu
Our Department does not handle retroactive credit.
